Want to Start Your Tech Career? Your Guide to UCAS Success with the University of Greenwich

Wondering what it's really like to study tech at university? We recently partnered with the University of Greenwich Faculty of Engineering & Science to host an online panel featuring inspiring women in STEM.

The event brought together current students, graduates, and industry professionals to share their experiences and advice about pursuing a tech career. Whether you're certain about your path or still exploring your options, their insights might help you make those big decisions about your future.

Meet Your Tech Role Models

Let's introduce you to our fantastic panel of women who were once in your position:

Holly, mathematics graduate
Niyati, second year mathematics student
Reda, final-year software engineering student

Finding Your Path in Tech

Choosing your future career path is a big decision. Our panellists shared their honest experiences about how they found their way:

Reda studies at the University of Greenwich and is already setting her sights on an exciting career in London's tech scene. She discovered her path through her love of mathematics and problem-solving. She found that software engineering offered the perfect combination of logical thinking and teamwork – proving that tech careers can be both challenging and social.

Niyati is currently in her second year of mathematics and serving as President of her university's Maths Society. Her story might surprise you – she wasn't always a fan of maths! Her journey shows that it's okay to change your mind. She initially didn't enjoy mathematics, but one inspiring teacher helped her see the subject in a new light. Now she's thriving in her university studies and leading her peers as Maths Society President.

Holly has discovered her passion for data engineering, showing how your degree can open unexpected and exciting career paths. Her story demonstrates how your career can evolve. After completing her mathematics degree, she explored various roles before finding her niche in data engineering. Her experience shows that your first choice doesn't have to be your final destination.

Why Consider the University of Greenwich?

Our panellists shared what drew them to the University of Greenwich:

  • The opportunity to study in London, with its vibrant tech scene and career opportunities
  • Valuable industry connections, including partnerships with the British Computer Society
  • A supportive learning environment that helps you transition from school to university
  • Beautiful campus views of Canary Wharf - a daily reminder of where your career could take you

Making Your UCAS Application Stand Out

Want to know what really matters in your UCAS application? Here's what our panel recommended:

Look beyond rankings - Niyati advises doing your own research rather than relying solely on university rankings. Focus on finding a course that matches your interests and goals.

Be genuine - Reda secured her place without previous computer science experience by showing genuine enthusiasm for technology. Your passion and potential matter more than perfect prerequisites.

Consider the whole picture - Think about course content, teaching style, available support, and campus culture. These factors can significantly impact your university experience.

International Students Welcome

Professor Noel-Ann Bradshaw from the University of Greenwich emphasises their commitment to supporting international students:

  • A first-year programme designed to help you adjust at a comfortable pace
